Summer Weather (Or, Remembering 1976)

Every single day for the past month, we have seen a sky like this when we wake up in the morning. Temperatures have hovered in the 80s. Today it's 73 or something, and that's the lowest it's been for awhile. It's typical summer weather for most of the world, maybe, but not for England! The average temperature for this time of year is 66, and usually that comes with a lot more rain.

It's somewhat funny, actually. I was talking to a friend's mother and she said, "This weather reminds me of the summer of 1976, when it was just sunny and warm almost every day." I thought that was somewhat hilarious that she still remembered the summer *42* years ago when the sun came out. Anyway, shortly thereafter, two other people separately in the village said the same thing. So, I guess it really hasn't been this sunny for almost half a century. And that this much sun is sufficiently remarkable we should make sure to remember it for posterity's sake.

We're not sure whether we'll be here in England in another 42 years for the next round, so we're trying to enjoy it as much as we can while it lasts. We had Becca's birthday party in the garden by the stream and we're trying to go out and about to soak up the sun everyday. But we do sort of hope it rains soon. Everything is so dry!

  1. Weather was warm during my visit--but I loved it! I rallied up bird species--61. Almost all of them were seen in your yard or the skies above it!

    1. Oh, wow! That's a lot of species! Yes, we've been liking the warm, too, although we really need some rain!! (Especially now that you're not here to water our pansies and fuscia :))

  2. Here in the Pacific Northwest there is a funny opposite trend where long-timers reminisce about summers that never happened. In our tenure here we've seen one genuine instance probably in the mid 1980s where it never warmed up and remained dark and drizzly all summer. I really wouldn't recommend a repeat. Enjoy the sunshine while it lasts.

    1. Ha! Yes, I imagine our climate somewhat resembles yours here (usually...) We are definitely enjoying the sunshine while it lasts. Wonder if we can store up a years worth of Vitamin D in a few weeks!?
