Wednesday Word: Pudding

To continue with our food-themed words, today I bring to you pudding.

Now I know you are all wondering why I have a picture of cookies (biscuits) in a post about pudding.

I would have wondered that myself a few weeks ago. But in another episode of Learning through Restaurant Dining (you might recall this is how we learned about squash...) we have recently discovered that puddings here are not delicious custardy things that we Americans have come to know and love. Rather, puddings are desserts of any kind, and especially seem to be associated with desserts for kids.

Just this week I learned there is yet another term for desserts/puddings and that is afters. Sometimes they are also called sweets, which is fairly straightforward. I guess people like dessert here if they have four separate words for it!

I myself prefer the term dessert, since when I order pudding I want it to actually be pudding, and since sometimes I want to eat my afters before instead. 😃 But as a great appreciator of all things sweet, I eat them when people serve them to me no matter what they are called!

  1. It’s me, tamara. We learned about the term, pudding, from our Welch friend who offered us pudding and served us cake.

    1. Yes, we thought it was funny when at a restaurant they asked if the kids wanted pudding. When they said, yes, the waiter said, what would you like? And they were confused...we already said we wanted pudding! We finally figured out they had to choose from the dessert menu :)
