Wednesday Word: Squash
When we first went out to dinner (which was actually supper) the children's menu declared that each main course came with a choice of orange or blackcurrant squash, and a dessert. I had never heard of those varieties of squash before, but thought it was great that vegetables got such a priority position on kids' menus. I ordered both kids the orange squash, thinking it sounded slightly more like a vegetable they would have seen before than blackcurrant.
Both kids squealed with joy when the waitress delivered their meals with juice bottles rather than vegetables...Yes, my friends,

squash=juice
There is a squash aisle in our supermarket, and it's next to the soda and lunch snacks, not the cabbage and potatoes. You can find squash on most children's menus, and it's not because kids here love veggies! I guess it's because the fruit is squashed to make the juice? Anyway, my kids were delighted that I didn't know this word upon arrival, because it meant they got an unplanned fruit juice treat at dinner that night!
I will end with this photo that has nothing to do with fruit juice, but comes from a pretty walk we took from our village last week. (It did make us all thirsty, so maybe that's the tie in...)
Fun little story. So squash is not a brand name but is used for juice in general?
ReplyDeleteYeah, all juice. The label for the aisle in the supermarket says squash...
DeleteAnd what do they call the roots we call squash?
DeleteHmmm...I will look next time we go to the store or farmers market.
