Snapshots from Our Move

We moved into our cottage on January 11 and our things arrived with the movers about a month later. We're finally mostly settled, and I'll post pics of the inside of our house soon, I promise! But there were a few weeks of unpacking and reorganizing and donating before we got everything in a proper place. The thing about old English houses like ours is that they have no closets. Literally none. Someday I'll take you all on a photographic tour of our lack of closet space! Anyway, as a consequence we had to get very creative about how we organized our new place.

After several days of hard work unpacking boxes and trying to fit everything, our living room still looked like this:

...and this:

 ...and this:

Did this situation make me want to cry? Yes, yes it did. There were (more than) a few moments when I wanted to give up. I really wanted to throw all the kids' toys away several times. And I definitely wished that there had been a course on Closet Space 101 for English architects of the 19th century.

Lest you think the chaos was confined to our living room, here is one more from our upstairs landing:

Just keeping it real for you all, in case you think we've been cavorting across green fields and nibbling on scones with Elizabeth Bennett...

We did manage to get everything properly labeled, at least, including Eric:

(This marked a moment of humor in a sea of desperation. We all had a good laugh. Somehow the label from Justin's mattress managed to end up, well, not where it was supposed to be. But like I said, at least everything was labeled properly. Wouldn't want this side up, after all!)

  1. I can empathize. Perhaps whoever built our house in 1906 did not know about closets either. Every closet we have ( we don’t have many) was either added by the contractors who remodeled in 1988 or by us after moving in. I would love a house with ample closets. Glad you are getting organized now.

    1. Yes, it probably does have to do with old houses built before ppl had so much stuff..I try to remind myself that it means we really don't need what wr think Eric do. Modern houses here have slightly more closet space but still way less than in the US.
